Review: Amy’s energy and enthusiasm are infectious, her knowledge and skill formidable, her approach flexible and pragmatic, and her attitude unfailingly encouraging. Her classes have re-ignited my interest in portrait painting.

“You can do this!”… Wise words spoken from our art teacher, which allowed everyone to take a collective sigh of relief, as we tackled each new project. And she was right, every single student came away with an amazing work of art.

Amy McDonald is a gifted teacher who gives you the essential tools you need to find confidence in creating art. I was privileged to have three portrait lessons under her gentle tutelage, and despite never having tried a portrait before, was immediately able to rough out some decent watercolor portraits in under one hour each.

Amy’s expert instruction encourages you to seek your own style using her techniques in your own medium. So, while she uses oils, she was totally comfortable with students using the tools they have on hand.

You will not regret any time spent with this artistic force of nature. She projects an infectious energy and artistic joie de vivre that will filter down to all aspects of your life!

Amy’s guidance during portrait school allowed me the freedom to experiment with various mediums. Doing this enabled me to see which medium I would like to use as I take possible portrait work further. I used oil pastel, acrylic, aquarelle crayons, soft pastel and gouache. Amy was helpful in advising which colors to use with my chosen medium and was encouraging when I wanted to go rogue. Her spirit, enthusiasm, and sense of playful fun made what could have been a very stressful attempt into a purely enjoyable learning endeavor. I would recommend anytime spent with Amy as time well spent. 😊

“I had never painted a portrait before taking this class and now I can’t stop! Literally, I am working with faces and expressions every day now because I gained so many new approaches to painting and shadowing faces. I was anxious about painting a face, but the class was relaxed and the results were outstanding! There are many videos that will help you proportion faces, but Amy’s approach is completely different. She taught me how to see color blocking, shadows, and the tiniest shades that influence expression. I have been blown away by the success I have had with the tools I learned. Amy was kind, honest, supportive, and wants to contribute in every way to my success.”

Review:
I had never attempted a portrait before attending one of Amy’s classes. She made it so approachable (even though I was using acrylics rather than oils) because she broke it down into clear steps. Her enthusiasm and encouragement provided additional momentum.
